My flower patch is in the middle of my lawn, can I still make a base around the patch or does the whole thing need to be replaced with a proper base?

You will only need to prepare the sub base for artificial grass only by leaving your flower patch the way it is. If not finished with any edging materials around the flower patch, you might need to do so by using either bender board or wonderedge to finish off the perimeters so the artificial turf can connect to the edges perfectly.
