Travel: Loess Hills give Iowa surprising character
MOORHEAD, Iowa — Many people would describe Iowa with a simplistic simile beginning "As flat as "Perhaps " a pancake," or maybe " a table top," or even " champagne on Jan. 2."I would have been guilty of such myself, before a recent drive through the state's scenic Loess Hills.Yes, Iowa has hills, and those hills have a geology that's most unusual. The narrow line of hills is composed of very fine soil called loess — pronounced luss — deposited in the last Ice Age and [...] Continue Reading
There are no signs of severe drought in California this year, but the state legislators continue to move down the road of water wasting mindset prevention. As a reminder to those residents and businesses who have gotten a little lazy and are back to using as much water as before the drought, water legislations are passing on through eight phases of the mandatory water conservation program. It's Murphy's law: "Just when you think things cannot get any worse, they will." But there is also some good news for Californians. Minimum wage is going up to $11-$12 per hour depending on company size. Women are getting more protection. Illegal businesses of the past are making into respected taxpayers.
As more and more sales are turning from brick and mortar stores to online, it's safe to say most people that buy gadgets online won't even consider purchasing synthetic grass online, unless it's small rugs for patios, garages, utility rooms, or batting cages. But why not? It seems that you can save much more on synthetic turf online than you can when you shop for a lamp or Chromebook.
On Monday, August 29, 2016, Gov. Jerry Brown signed new Hill's Senate Bill 814, that allows water suppliers to use extreme measures to prevent waste and unreasonable use of water in California during one of the most severe droughts documented in the last century. Existing law states that a violation of water conservation program can be punished by "imprisonment in a county jail for not more than 30 days, or by a fine not exceeding $1,000, or both."
Wasting water in California during severe drought alert can become expensive. State Senator Jerry Hill, , D-San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, is proposing a law as a part of nine bills, that would define excessive water use and charge violators, at least, $500 if they use more water than established as acceptable. Senate Bill 814 is the result of a San Mateo residents call for a crackdown on excessive water wasters.
