What is the difference between woven fabric and traditional artificial grass backing? Does it change the installation process?

There is a big difference between woven back and regular back: The woven back is actually just the grass fibers knitted together, then apply glue coating on them to hold fibers in place; regular artificial grass backing is layers of Polypropylene cloth on which fibers being tufted, then glue coating to be applied on. So Technically they are two totally differently types of production procedures: Knitted vs Tufted, normal people only see the differences on the backing part and not knowing the two products are actually made differently. Knitting is an old way of making carpet, the production rate is super low, as far as I am aware of that the machines are using to make artificial grass on today’s market are at least 30 years old which is the main reason the pricing for such products is really high, not necessarily a better products but just time consuming to make them. Knitted artificial grass has full permeability which is the only selling point for such product, however in reality, tufted artificial grass can drain just as well. Tufting is the new technology to make artificial grass and productions can be way faster and efficient than knitting, and tufting is the trend of today’s industry.

As far as installation goes, knitted artificial grass is much harder to install, as it doesn’t have a solid backing, the entire product are wavy, flimsy as a piece of cloth. When it comes to installing it, a lot of holding and stretching have to be done to ensure the results, otherwise the turf surface will look like a piece of soft cloth with wrinkles all over it. Therefore, knitted artificial grass is not only costly to made but also much more expensive to install. Again the only selling point of such old knitted artificial grass is its full permeability which in my mind is just a marketing approach than actual functionality.
